Committee of 101

The following are newspaper clips, quotes, and other historical notes that pertain to the so-called "Committee of 101," a citizen's group that controlled Skagway in the period between September 1897 and July 1898.
There has been a nominal supervision exercised over the town by the Committee of One Hundred and One, a body of men elected by the people during the first great influx into this place. It was a sort of a committee of safety or vigilance committee, but this has fallen into a state of innocuous desuetude, for the very good reason that there has been nothing for it to do (The Skaguay News, December 31, 1897, page 2).
